⏰ Rivian Shift-Change Alert

Saturday's parade closes Uptown at 6 AM — and I-74 stays narrowed through November

Two road facts decide the plant-side commute this week. First: the Town of Normal closes the roads around the Homecoming Town and Gown 5K and Parade beginning at 6 AM this Saturday, Oct. 24, reopening them as soon as it's safely possible after the festivities. Second: IDOT's lane closures on Interstate 74 from Bloomington to Downs — running since July 13 for pavement reconstruction — stay in place until November, with delays expected. The ground rule, stated once and kept: Rivian does not publish its shift times, so this alert never guesses them. Anyone who tells you a plant schedule they scraped or heard secondhand is selling you a rumor. What is public is the roads — and the roads are what this alert runs on.

Saturday, Oct. 24 — the early start is the trap. The 5K and the parade are morning events, and the Town's closures begin at 6 AM, before either one starts: the 5K steps off at 8 AM from the Student Fitness Center, and the parade starts at 10 AM at University Street and College Avenue, with what the Town calls "extensive street closures" on the route — College Avenue, School Street, North Street and Uptown Circle included. If your Saturday begins with a drive anywhere near Uptown Normal — to a shift, to a kid's shift, to the parade itself with kids in the back seat — the closure map is already in force when you leave. The Town posts the impact map with its notice; the practical move is to route around Uptown entirely until the Town reopens the streets, not to test which access points are still open. And if you are headed to the festivities, the Town's own notice carries the parking answer: the College Avenue deck is free for the duration of the event, with more event parking at the Trail East and West lots. The decision this changes: Saturday's leave-time. Build the detour into the morning before it builds itself into your arrival — and if you're dropping someone at an early shift, say the quiet part at home Friday night, not at the closed intersection Saturday.

Through November — I-74 is one lane narrower in your head. IDOT's release is blunt about the reconstruction zone from Bloomington to Downs: "Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered." That's the standing condition until November — not a this-week event, a this-season fact. If the interstate is your shift route, the extra minutes are now part of the commute, and the mornings you skip them are the mornings the work zone picks for you. Standing work zone — Uptown's Underpass construction. Since Monday, Sept. 21, the Parkinson Street Parking Lot off Linden Avenue has been closed and fenced as the construction zone for the Uptown Underpass project, and the Constitution Trail is detoured around it. The Town's posted trail detour runs west on Phoenix Avenue to Broadway Avenue, north on Broadway to the north sidewalk of Beaufort Street, then east along Beaufort to Uptown Circle — and the trail stays detoured at the Phoenix Avenue intersection until construction is complete. If your commute is two wheels on the Trail, that detour is your route now, with the Town's reminder attached: cyclists who ride the sidewalk through Uptown must dismount and walk. Starting this month — Illinois 9 joins the list. IDOT's Rebuild Illinois project list for Bloomington-Normal has the next Illinois 9 project — resurfacing, patching and other improvements — starting in October 2026 and anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2027, with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction. Cross-town drivers who lean on Route 9 get their own version of the I-74 rule starting now: the lane you count on is not guaranteed. 📩 Send this to the one person whose Saturday starts before the parade does — the early-shift driver, the parent doing the 6 AM drop-off, the Trail commuter whose route quietly moved to Beaufort Street. They find out at the barricade or from you. Be the one they hear it from.

💬 One-word reply: UPTOWN or 74 — which one has cost you more minutes this month? One word; the tally runs in next week's alert.
