π Parent Survival Matrix
The weekend, planned for parents β Thu, Oct. 22 through Sun, Oct. 25, 2026.

The 1,601st family in line gets turned away
That's not a scare tactic, it's the Town of Normal's own rule: the Haunted Trail on Constitution Trail caps at 1,600 people a night, and when the cap hits, the trail closes. This weekend is the scary weekend β Fri., Oct. 23 and Sat., Oct. 24, 6:30β9:00 PM β $5 a person, cash only, tickets at the gate only. So the whole weekend runs on one decision: which night, how early, and what your kid's age band does while the sun is still up. Here it is by age, because a toddler's Saturday and a teenager's Saturday are not the same Saturday.
0β4 Β· Babies & toddlers
- Thu., Oct. 22, 10:00 AM β Toddler Story Time Bloomington. Bloomington Public Library, Children's Program Rooms 1 & 2. Books, rhymes, music, and movement built for kids who are always on the go. No registration listed β just show up.
- Fri., Oct. 23, 10:00 AM β Sign & Sing with Communication Junction Normal. Normal Public Library, Community Room. Miss Meghan leads stories, movement, rhymes β and bubbles. Thirty minutes, right-sized for the under-4 attention span.
- Sun., Oct. 25, 2:00 PM β Not-So-Spooky Stories Bloomington (also in the 5β8 band below β it is genuinely all-ages). The costume test-run; see below.
5β8 Β· The costume rehearsal band
- Sat., Oct. 24, 9:30β10:30 AM β Creative Kids & Caregivers: Spooky Creations, ages 6β8 Bloomington. A parent-child Halloween craft class at Bloomington Public Library, Children's Program Room 1. Registration required β this is the weekend's first decision. Register before you plan around it.
- Sun., Oct. 25, 2:00β3:00 PM β Not-So-Spooky Stories with Mike Lockett Bloomington. "Silly and chilly" tales in the Children's Program Rooms, and the library says it plainly: come dressed in your costume. This is the low-stakes Halloween β a full costume rehearsal in daylight, a week before the real night, with zero scary anything.
- Fri., Oct. 23, 10:00 AM β Fun Friday Story Time Bloomington. Birth through age 11 with their grown-ups, Children's Program Rooms 1 & 2 β thirty minutes of music, movement, and stories if Friday morning is your open slot.
9β12 Β· Old enough to build something
- Sat., Oct. 24, 10:45β11:45 AM β Spooky Creations, ages 9β11 Bloomington. The older session of the same parent-child craft class, Children's Program Room 1. Registration required β same warning as the 6β8 session: the seat is the plan.
- Thu., Oct. 22, 5:00β6:15 PM β TinkerCrafting Normal. Normal Public Library's Tinker Studio. Kids design in TinkerCad, the 3D design app, around this month's theme. Registration required.
- Any weekend day, 9:30 AMβ4:30 PM β Miller Park Zoo Bloomington. The daytime anchor (full cost line in the all-family band below). Big enough to fill a morning, small enough that nobody melts down by the flamingos.
Teens Β· 13+
- Fri., Oct. 23 & Sat., Oct. 24, 6:30β9:00 PM β The Haunted Trail, Scary Nights Normal. This is the teen event of the weekend β a quarter-mile of Constitution Trail from Vernon Avenue to the Connie Link Amphitheatre, sound and lighting effects, strobe included. The town recommends it for 13+; anyone 12 and under must be with an adult. Line up behind Normal City Hall Annex, 100 E. Phoenix Ave. $5 cash at the gate β no advance regular tickets exist β or $12 VIP tickets bought in advance online, which cut the wait. Free parking from 5:00 PM at the Uptown Station and Beaufort parking garages, with shuttles back to Uptown from the end of the trail. Two honest warnings: the 1,600-person cap is strict, and the scary-night dirt portion is not stroller- or wheelchair-accessible.
- Sat., Oct. 24, 3:00β4:00 PM β Rainbow Connections Normal. Normal Public Library, Tinker Studio: LGBTQ+ books, a craft, and low-pressure conversation for teens. Registration required.
- Sat., Oct. 24, 2:00β4:00 PM β Let's Sew a Community Quilt Bloomington. Bloomington Public Library's Innovation Lab, drop-in, teens and adults: sew one square of a community quilt. No sewing experience needed β the library's words, and the reason a parent can hand this one to a teen who's "too old for Halloween."
All-family Β· The anchors
- Miller Park Zoo, 1020 S. Morris Ave. Bloomington β open every day 9:30 AMβ4:30 PM (grounds cleared at 5:00). Adults $9 Β· ages 3β12 $7 Β· ages 2 and under free Β· parking free. Red pandas, snow leopards, river otters, the Wallaby WalkAbout. Concessions are weekends-only right now, and the carousel is off-site being restored β set expectations in the car, not at the gate.
- Journey to Freedom: Illinois' Underground Railroad exhibit Bloomington β Bloomington Public Library, Community Room 1, on display during open hours. All ages, no ticket, no schedule to keep: the free indoor filler when a plan collapses.
- Halloween Tic-Tac-Toe on the Bookmobile Bloomington + Normal β running all month at Bookmobile stops, all ages. If the Bookmobile is coming to your neighborhood anyway, Halloween is already on it.
Weather contingency β the NWS call
The National Weather Service (Lincoln) forecast for Bloomington-Normal: Thu. 75Β° and sunny Β· Fri. 74Β° Β· Sat. 74Β° Β· Sun. 78Β°, with a 0% chance of rain in every period and nights dropping to 45Β° Friday and 48Β° Saturday. Translation: no rain plan needed this weekend β every library item above is indoors anyway, and the only weather-exposed plans are the zoo (go in the morning warmth) and the Haunted Trail. The real contingency is temperature, not rain: by the 6:30 PM trail lineup the evening is headed for the mid-40s overnight, so it's a costume-over-a-hoodie night. Layers under the costume, decided at home, beat a cold negotiation at the gate.
Book it now, not Friday
Three registration-required items sit inside this weekend β Spooky Creations (both sessions, Sat.), TinkerCrafting (Thu.), Rainbow Connections (Sat.) β and one more lands three days after it: Halloween Hullabaloo, Wed., Oct. 28, 10:00 AM Normal, Normal Public Library β costume parade, stories, refreshments, and prizes for kids, registration required. If your under-6 missed the not-so-spooky brief this weekend, the Hullabaloo is the make-up date β and its seats are claimed this week, not next.
Send this to the one parent still deciding whether their kid is ready for the scary trail β the ages, the cap, and the cash-only gate are all in here.
One-word reply: TRAIL or STORIES β which one is your house this year? (Answers set next weekend's Matrix order.)
