🤫 Off-Menu Hidden Gems
One elite dish, one kitchen — the Local Bites hunt for the plates that aren't on the menu board.
The most famous sandwich in BloNo keeps its dressing in a cup — on purpose
The Famous Gondola® at Avanti's Italian Restaurant, 3302 E Empire St., Bloomington, arrives with its house Italian dressing on the side, in a cup — and that small decision is the whole dish. The sandwich itself is ham, salami, American cheese, and lettuce on Italian bread the restaurant bakes from scratch daily — "Home of the Famous Gondola®!" is how Avanti's own site introduces itself, adding that "our bread is made from scratch and baked fresh daily" (avantisbloomington.com). The build and the dressing-on-the-side service are confirmed in a sourced feature on the restaurant: "The Famous Gondola comes loaded with ham, salami, American cheese, and lettuce, all nestled in fresh Italian bread… they serve it with a side of their house Italian dressing. Not on the sandwich, mind you, but on the side, so you can control your own destiny" (familydestinationsguide.com).
Why the cup matters. A dressed sub starts dying the minute it's wrapped — the lettuce wilts, the bread goes soft, and by the time a carry-out order crosses town it's a different sandwich. Avanti's solved it the low-tech way decades of regulars ago: the sandwich travels dry and intact, and the dressing — the tangy, herb-heavy house Italian — is applied by the eater, bite by bite, dip or drizzle. The bread stays crusty, the lettuce stays crisp, and the last bite eats like the first. It's not a garnish choice. It's the engineering that made this the carry-out sandwich of Bloomington.
The order, exactly. Get the full Gondola — $10.60 on Avanti's DoorDash menu, where it sits as the store's #1 most liked item (doordash.com). Full, not half: the sandwich's whole economy is size-per-dollar on fresh-baked bread, and the leftovers hold up precisely because the dressing never touched them. Then use the cup the way the regulars do — dip the cut face, don't pour. Pouring is how you turn an engineered sandwich back into a soggy one.
When to get it. Avanti's own site posts dine-in 11:30 AM–8:00 PM and carry-out, curbside, and delivery 10:30 AM–9:00 PM, Monday–Saturday — closed Sunday (avantisbloomington.com), at two Twin City doors: the Bloomington original at 3302 E Empire St. and the Normal store at 407 S Main St., a walk from the ISU side of town (the DoorDash menu above is the Normal store's). The Gondola is a lunch-and-early-dinner play — this is not the late-night door (that's Beaufort Street, in the Late-Night College Feed) — and it's the strongest family-table version of the decision: one sandwich feeds the kid half now and, undressed, the fridge half later.
For the parent reading this over a student's shoulder: if your family has an Avanti's order — and in Bloomington, three-generation Avanti's orders are a documented phenomenon, per the restaurant's own DoorDash reviews ("My family have been coming to Avantis for 3 generations") — the Gondola is the one to send your Titan or Redbird back to campus with. It is built, deliberately, to survive the trip.
Send this to the one person who grew up on Gondolas and still has a strong opinion about the cup — every BloNo family has one, and they will want to argue about dip versus drizzle.
Settle it in one word: reply DIP or DRIZZLE. The results run at the top of this franchise next time — receipts, not vibes.
