The rolodex with zero stars in it

No stars. No reviews. No "4.8, sponsored" — nothing in this rolodex can be bought, gamed, or padded, because every entry has to clear the same two gates: the business's own published record proves what it does, or a reader nominates it and then it proves what it does. That's the whole system. It opens this week with fall breathing down the county's neck — the first cold snap is a scheduling problem, and the two verified entries below are the two October calls — and with most of its chairs still empty. The empty chairs are the point. They're yours to fill.

How an entry gets in (the only way)

1. A reader nominates. Reply to any issue of the Bagel with the trade and the business's name — the pro who actually showed up at your house. One nomination per reader per week; it keeps the rolodex a rolodex and not a billboard.
2. We verify against the business's own material. Its own site and listings: services, service area, contact — in its own words. If the business's own pages don't state it, the entry doesn't claim it. No star ratings are collected, quoted, or invented at any step.
3. It prints as a working card — trade, town, what they do, how to reach them, and the first-timer move. Entries get re-verified as the seasons turn; a card that stops checking out comes out.

The same family runs Blackout Pavement (paving, sealcoating, striping) and a snow & ice management crew, so the relationship you start in October is the one that answers in January.
First-timer move: fall is the aeration-and-seeding window — the single best stretch of the year to fix a tired lawn — and it's closing. Or walk the Hovey Avenue yard and price the mulch-and-rock project you've been putting off since June.

These trades have no verified entry yet. Until a nomination lands and clears verification, the honest state of the rolodex is a blank card — and a blank card beats a borrowed rating every time:

• Roofer — before the first ice dam, not after.
• Tree service — the crew your street calls after a storm.
• Concrete & masonry — driveways don't fix themselves in April either.
• Painter — interior season is about to start.
• Handyman — the list-of-small-things person every house in McLean County needs.
