π ΏοΈ Campus Parking Roulette
ISU's meter math, permit flips, and pay-lot clocks β the published rules, lot by lot.
16 hours at one meter, 1 hour at another β at ISU, the meter makes the call.
At the South University Street Garage, the meters allow up to 16 hours. At Hancock Stadium, the meter caps you at 1 hour β long enough for a pickup, not for a game. In between: Milner Library meters give you 2 hours, the Honors Program Building 5. Same campus, same coin, a different day depending on which pole you feed. The full meter table, lot by lot, is on the Parking office's visitor page: parking.illinoisstate.edu/parking/visitor/
Why it feels like roulette. Most ISU permits are virtual now β your license plate is the permit, read by plate-recognition cameras, so there's no hangtag to glance at and no obvious "this lot is spoken for" signal. The rules flip by the clock and by the color of the lot: commuter (green) and faculty/staff (red) surface lots are permit territory during the day, then β per the Parking office β free parking opens in those same red and green lots weekdays 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. and all day on weekends, unless posted otherwise. The lot that would get you ticketed at 6:58 p.m. is legal at 7:01. Where to Park β ISU Parking
The pay-for-certainty options, with their clocks. The Bone Student Center pay lot runs Mon.βThu. 7 a.m.β9 p.m., Fri. 7 a.m.β5:30 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m.β5 p.m., closed Sundays in the fall semester β and there's no charge if you leave after hours. The South University Street Garage is pre-pay: decide your hours up front at a pay station or in the Park Smarter app, which also lets you add time from your seat. Every pay lot on campus closes 4β6 a.m., and there is no overnight parking in them β overnight means a temporary permit. ISU visitor parking
Visiting after hours? There's a 24/7 door. Temporary visitor permits come from the Office of Parking and Transportation during business hours (Mon.βFri. 7:30 a.m.β4:30 p.m.); after hours, ISU Police issue them around the clock at (309) 438-8631 β good for one day. ISU campus maps β parking
Across town, the other campus plays it simpler. At Illinois Wesleyan, all campus parking is free. After 5 p.m. and on weekends, visitors may park in any campus lot; on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., visitors stick to designated visitor lots and spaces to avoid ticketing and towing. Two campuses, two rulebooks β the one you're parked at is the one that counts. IWU visitor information
Parents, this page is yours too. Driving in to see your Redbird or your Titan β for a game, a concert, a dorm-room rescue β the rules above are the whole game: ISU after 7 p.m. or on weekends, the green and red lots are free; before that, feed the right meter or take the Bone lot. At IWU, arrive after 5 p.m. and every lot is open to you, free. One exception swallows the whole board: ISU posts special parking arrangements for major events β athletics, concerts, commencement, move-in β so on the biggest nights, check the event plan before you trust the usual rules. And there's a zero-dollar square on the board: Connect Transit is free to ride for ISU students, faculty, and staff with a valid university ID β the drop-off that never needs a space. One more for longer stays: the Dean of Students office lists off-campus options including multi-day and monthly permits at Heartland Parking in Uptown Station, (309) 433-3445. What we will not print as fact: which lot "always" has a space at 8 a.m., which street the students colonize first, whose garage fills by kickoff. Nobody publishes that. The Parking office prints its own warning about the folklore: only that office may authorize parking outside the stated rules β "do not accept parking advice from any other entity," because the risk is a citation. We take the hint. So this module runs the other way: your reports are the data, labeled as reader reports, and next week we print the flip-map only from what you actually send.
π³οΈ The poll β school-night parking, your real move
- Circle until something opens β it's a system, sort of
- Green lot after 7 p.m. β free and legal, I plan around it
- Pay lot or garage β I pay for certainty
- I don't drive to campus at all β bus, bike, or feet
And the reply hook: reply with your lot + the time you got there + the day ("Green lot by Watterson, 6:40 p.m., Tuesday"). One line is enough. We aggregate, we label it reader-reported, and the lots that flip first get named β from your windshields, not our guesses.
Send this to the one parent driving in to see their kid this weekend β the 7 p.m. rule will save them a ticket, and the meter table will save them a lap around Hancock.
